SCHOOL-SITE MENTORING

Caring high school students or adult mentors (Bigs) and young student ages 5-12 (Littles) spend time together once per week at the Little's school doing activities they both enjoy.

IT'S TEACHER-APPROVED.

While it may take place at Little's school during the school day, our School-Site mentoring program isn’t limited to the classroom. At the end of the day, it's about starting a friendship, providing guidance, and empowering youth to reach their full potential. When matches meet at the school they can take time to do activities they both enjoy, like:

  • Playing on the playground
  • Arts and crafts
  • Helping your Little with their homework
  • Reading in the library
  • Playing board games

Each match is unique and develops a weekly 30 minute meeting schedule that works for them.  A Match Support Specialist works with Bigs, Littles, and the Little's teacher to find the time of day that works best for everyone.

ROLE MODELS MAKE AN IMPACT

Studies show that children who have role models are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and friends, and less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. Students who are successful in school are less likely to drop out, abuse drugs, or commit crimes.

In Southern Minnesota in 2023:

  • 100% of Littles report their Big makes their life better
  • 99% of Bigs reported their Little's mental health has maintained or improved over the last year
  • 97% of parents reported their child’s interest in school has maintained or improved over the last year
