AVID

The AVID program matches mentors with a student enrolled in an AVID class at their school. Matches meet twice a month, both virtually and in-person, during the school day.

EMPOWERING FUTURE LEADERS.

AVID is a college and career readiness class that helps students strengthen basic skills and reinforce positive habits that will make students more successful in the classroom and beyond. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides AVID students in Faribault and Owatonna with a mentor and friend.

Matches meet during the student's class time on a set hybrid schedule. Meetings primarily take place virtually, with 4 in-person visits at the student's school throughout the year to strengthen friendships and create a stronger impact. Activities are focused on topics like:

  • College and career exploration
  • Encouraging academic success
  • Future planning

ROLE MODELS MAKE AN IMPACT

Studies show that children who have role models are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and friends, and less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. Students who are successful in school are less likely to drop out, abuse drugs, or commit crimes.

In Southern Minnesota in 2023:
